Smart but Scattered Teens The "Executive Skills" Program for Helping Teens Reach Their Potential Richard Guare Peg Dawson Colin Guare 9781609182298 Books Reviews
- I have a kid who's gifted & in gifted classes. Understands high level concepts, but can't figure out how to organize his locker or manage to turn in his homework - even though he's completed it. It's been bandied about maybe he has autism or ADD, but those didn't fit. This book describes him to a T. Not having the frontal lobe of his brain maturing at the same rate as his peers is a simple, logical explanation & the ensuing ways to deal are enlightening & helpful. This book was a god-send. It was suggested by his gifted teacher after she spent time with him.
- I wish I had known about this book when my daughter was 12 instead of 17. If there is any observation that your very bright child cannot seem to get it all done, this is a MUST READ. It offers insight as well as some helpful hints. But sooner is better than later when it comes to implementing the suggestions.
- I heard Richard and his son speak at a conference and enjoyed his presentation so decided to buy his book to see if it had more information that I could use with clients. I'd say the book is more 3.5 stars that 3 stars. This ok is definitely geared towards parents, and I can see how the book is written and organized with that audience in mind. As a professional, I was still able to glean some information that I could use with clients, so it wasn't a total waste. If you're a parent of a child with ADHD and are not already working with a professional to address your child's struggles, I think this book would be helpful.
- I originally purchased this book to help me with my son with Asperger's, but very quickly realized it was about my oldest daughter. She had the same memory and executive skill weaknesses my youngest son with Asperger's showed. She was later diagnosed with dsylexia which definitely causes short term memory loss, inability to multitask, and frustrating answer's such as "I forgot". I recommend this book for any parent raising kids of any kind because all of mine exhibit some or all of the the behaviors. Some kids are forgetful by nature others by choice, but this book is a great read to work with all kinds of kids regardless his/her weakness. i still pick this book up and glance through the pages I've marked as a refresher.
- I've been working with my son with ADHD for ten years trying to find something that actually works. This books provides the tools to help parents work in a positive way to teach their teens skills that they lack or are weak with.
- Excellent book for any parent and gifted teen who is scattered or has attention issues. This is written as a practical guide for teens and parents who need a little bit of guidance and help for their brilliant teenager who just can't quite get their life on track whether it be at school or at home. I recommend this book for anyone who has a twice gifted child.
- Complicated. This is probably a great book to use in conjunction with a therapist who can help analyze, interpret, and work with the family. Would not recommend as a DYI
- As a clinical psychologist I regard this as one of the best resources for parents of teens. This helps parents to look at the teen with ADHD as having some executive skills impairments that need remediation and understanding. Parents also rate their own executive skills and can try to be a better fit in parenting these adolescents. There are many constructive suggestions in this book and I highly recommend it.
